If you can't have fun with your nails, why bother?

Where would you be without your hands? Our hands hold us down in every aspect of our lives, the least we could do is made sure they look their best. Think about how many people come in contact with your hands. How do they represent you? As your hands are an extension of you, you should express yourself through them. What better way than to go above and beyond with how you paint, shape, and bedazzle your nails! I like to say if you can't have fun with it then why bother?

I look at my nails as an accessory. They take my every day looks to the next level. Some days I like to coordinate them with what I'm wearing and other times, I count on them to add contrast. I don't have a preference when it comes to styles. I'll rock them short, long, square, round, etc. I just need to be able to function. I'm a writer and I need my fingers to type as fast as I think! Seeing how much fun trying new nail shapes and designs can be, inspires me to keep pushing my limits. I never thought I would be one to wear a different color on each hand or rock an ombre design but once I found that I could share more of myself with my nails, I never turned back.

I used to have so many nail designs that I wanted to try but didn't know anyone who could execute them. Going to a nail shop was always fun but I felt limited. Either I had to deal with a language barrier to get my idea across and then paid $10 extra per finger or I settled for a solid color. It's so beautiful that nail artists have become so accessible. There are nail designers that treat your hands like true pieces of art. What's also dope is that these artists are just as excited that you will allow them to express themselves with your nails. I have the best time working with artists to design something I've been visioning for an upcoming outing or just for fun.

Finding a local artist that aligns with your style is key. I have found that when you and the artists' style align, you have a better time because you both are as invested in what you're creating. I hate to sound so deep about nail art but that's really how it feels. Searching Instagram can get you started. The platform gives you access to a variety of artists around the world while allowing you to see what the artist is capable of. Many of the designs you see here were found that way. If nothing else, you can add what you find to a folder and use it for inspiration the next time you are looking to add some spicy to your look.

Now for those of you, like myself, that don't always have the time or money to get your nails done, DO IT YOURSELF! Like with anything, the more you practice, the better you'll become. Doing my own nails relaxes me and challenges my creativity. Having a vision is one thing but being able to create it yourself is another amazing feeling. Buy yourself a few colors that you think you would like to mix and match and have fun! You'll soon find that you want to invest further. Once I really got into it, I was ordering tools for polka dots and gems and charms to just see what I could do. Did they always look great? NOPE! But it was cool to see what I had attempted.

(The polka dots along with the pink + blue hands are some of my most recent attempts)

Never be afraid to step out of the box and push your limits. Fashion is about creating what's next. The industry wouldn't be here if designers played it safe and were satisfied with what already existed. You shouldn't be satisfied either. Go try the craziest design you see and I bet it'll inspire you to keep taking chances. And hey, if I'm wrong and all my advice fails you, just take it off with some nail polish remover!
